About Stretch Marks

What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks are formed with hormonal changes when the body undergoes a spurt of growth that is faster on the inside, than on the outside. This causes the collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis (middle layer of skin) to stretch and tear. The body responds by forming scar tissue, known as stretch marks, which appear through the epidermis (top layer of skin) in the form of purplish or reddish streaks.

Who can get stretch marks?
Anyone can get stretch marks, but those most susceptible include pregnant women, adolescents undergoing rapid growth, body builders and people who experience rapid weight gain and loss.

Where do stretch marks appear?
Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, but are most likely to appear in places where larger amounts of fat deposits are stored. Therefore they most commonly occur on the stomach, hips, thighs, breasts and buttocks.

How to deal with stretch marks
There are many skin care brands on the market that claim to “erase/remove/cure” stretch marks, but the truth is once you have them the best you can do is to help improve their appearance.

The best solution is to help prevent the appearence of stretch marks in the first place.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula for stretch marks has a range of specialist stretch mark products developed to help increase the moisturisation and elasticity of the skin, to help it stretch as it expands, helping to prevent the appearence of stretch marks.
